“Thanks to the hard work of Captain Fuller, the twenty-second precinct has their highest close rate in history.”

“It’s, like, half a percent higher than it was,” Cassie whispered as she tugged on her formal uniform jacket.

“Babe, shut up,” Tessa whispered back.

“Tonight, we are honoring Captain Cassandra Fuller for her tireless efforts for the city of Boston,” the commissioner said.

“You know I hate awards,” Cassie whispered.

“You’re the youngest female captain in BPD history and only the third youngest overall, Cass. Let them honor you,” her wife insisted.

The applause drowned out whatever else Tessa had been trying to say. Shit… They’d already announced something, and she’d missed it.

“Babe, that’s your cue,” Tessa said, leaning over and smiling at her. “Go on stage,” she added.

“Crap,” Cassie said, placing a fake smile on her face as she stood up.

She made her way to the stage, continuing the smile gag all the way up until she was doing the ceremonial handshake while holding the award she’d just received as the camera shutters clicked around them.

“Thank you, Commissioner,” Cassie said as she reached the podium. “I’m not great with speeches.” She tried to chuckle away her nervousness. “I can give a toast to someone else with the best of them, but asking me to give a speech about myself is just about the worst thing you can do to me, so thanks again, sir,” she said, hoping the Commissioner would get the joke.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” he replied, laughing back at her.

Cassie gave a short speech. She thanked the city of Boston for the opportunity to serve them in her role, she thanked the department for allowing her to serve alongside her brothers and sisters in blue, and she thanked her wife, who was sitting near the front of the room of circular tables with white tablecloths, smiling up at her. Cassie couldn’t believe her life right now. She’d helped bring down an entire crime family that had dominated the city for the past three decades. It had been a long and slow investigation involving a task force, undercover officers, wiretaps, and a lot of back-breaking police work. Finally, she’d managed to lock up not only the head of the operations but his heir-apparent and three top lieutenants as well. Crime would always be a part of the fabric of this city, but she took pride in the work her officers put into making it ever a little safer by bringing down a group of criminals that had plagued Boston since before Cassie had been born. She took more pride in the fact that no other officer had managed to do it before her. When she finished the speech, she rushed off the stage and back to her table, where Tessa took her hand under it and squeezed it.

“Have I mentioned how great you look in that uniform?” she whispered, kissing Cassie on the cheek.

“Once or twice,” Cassie laughed off, letting the blush takeover her cheeks.

“I love it, but I was thinking, I could take it off when we get home, Hero,” Tessa started.
